Updated design and one million copies sold

“When it was time to redesign the cover of Framework for Understanding Poverty, we felt so lucky to find Kathi Dunn who took our title, message, colors, and history and melded them. The cover was new, and we recognized it as being perfect for us — and the dramatic boost we saw in sales as a result of the redesign was proof that we were right to make the change. We’ve now sold over 1,000,000 copies of our self-published book!”

— Ruby K. Payne, Ph.D., Author, Speaker and Founder of aha! Process, Inc.

Since 1995 A Framework for Understanding Poverty has guided hundreds of thousands of educators and other professionals through the pitfalls and barriers faced by all classes, especially the poor. Author Ruby K. Payne, Ph.D. has been a professional educator since 1972 (a secondary-school teacher and department chairperson, an elementary-school principal, a consultant, and a central-office administrator).

Her lessons and methods were so sought-after that she began photocopying and compiling them into binders at Kinko’s. The demand grew and it soon came time to transform the handmade booklets a “real” book which Ruby published in 1995. Within three years there were 81,000 copies in print.

We were invited to create a more professional-looking cover. The stipulation was that we had to keep the colors for this book which had become widely known as “The Red Book.” The fresh new cover spawned even greater sales. 200,000 copies were in print by the year 2000 and, ever year since then, Framework has sold more than 100,000 copies per year.

In 2004 and 2005, Framework sales averaged about 750 books sold every business day — about 15,000 a month, reaching 180,000 books sold per year. Clearly, it’s rare for anyone — even for the largest publishers — to sell one million copies of a book. We were thrilled to revise the cover again in 2006 when we added these words to the front cover: “Over 1,000,000 Copies Sold.”

We helped develop additional marketing support collateral and product extensions . . .
